Arcella documentation

Installation and configuration

Add the theme and preview it

  1. In Shopify admin, go to Online Store > Themes and add the theme to your theme library.
  2. Select Customize to open the theme editor. Your live store doesn’t change until you select Publish.
  3. The theme ships with one style, Arcella: warm ivory backgrounds, an editorial serif for headings and a clean sans-serif for text. It’s a starting point, and every part can be changed in Theme settings (colors, fonts, buttons, signature details).

First-time setup checklist

  1. Theme settings > Logo and favicon: upload your logo and favicon.
  2. Theme settings > Colors and Typography: set your color schemes and fonts (section 2).
  3. Online Store > Navigation: build your main menu and footer menus (section 7).
  4. Home page: pick a collection in Featured collection. Until you do, it shows placeholder cards. Then add images to the Editorial hero and Editorial story sections (section 4).
  5. Product page: review the blocks in Product information. If you use materials or care details, create the metafields first (section 9).
  6. Collections: add a collection image to each collection, and install Shopify’s Search & Discovery app for filters (section 6).
  7. Theme settings > Cart: choose Drawer or Page (section 8).
  8. Preview on a phone-sized screen (the device icon at the top of the editor) before publishing.

Images: sizes, focal points and alt text

  • Upload photos at least 2000 px on the long edge. Shopify accepts JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF and HEIC up to 20 MB and 20 megapixels. It resizes images and serves modern formats automatically.
  • Set a focal point on each image (in the image picker or Content > Files). Whenever a layout crops an image, the theme keeps the focal point in view.
  • Write alt text for every image that carries meaning, for example “Model wearing a long camel wool coat”.
